June was another busy month for updates to the International Comparisons database.
Comprehensive updates
Two country files were updated in full: Benin and Turkey.
One of Africa’s most stable democracies, Benin has seen significant developments to its education system in recent years, especially surrounding its provision of technical and vocational education.
The file now includes information on formal technical secondary education, dual VET programmes and apprenticeships in a new comprehensive Technical and Vocational Education section, as well as academic qualifications offered at school and higher education level.
Members admitting Turkish students to undergraduate programmes will find useful information in the School and Higher Education sections of the updated Turkey file.
The former has been expanded to provide further information about the curricula involved at each stage of school education, as well as the three streams students may follow at the upper secondary level. The latter covers current standardised university entrance examinations.
There have been a number of changes to higher education institutions in Turkey in recent years, including mergers, name changes and closures. The Higher Education Institutions listing has been fully updated to reflect this, and information about institutional accreditation has also been added.
Accreditation and quality assurance
Information on accreditation of institutions and programmes and quality assurance processes has been added to the files for Dominica, Mauritania and Mauritius for the first time, and the information for Egypt, France and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus has been updated.
Transnational education
Our coverage of transnational education (TNE) around the world continues to grow with information now included for over 50 countries.
A new section for India covers the regulations introduced in 2016 which define the parameters for the operation of TNE partnerships. With the possibility that the previously blocked Foreign Education Providers Bill will be revisited and international branch campuses may be permitted in future, we will be keeping an eye on developments in the Indian regulatory landscape for TNE.
